The existing roof garden on top of the Pixel Building was originally designed for biodiversity while celebrating the native grass and plants of the Melbourne area. Our take on this new retro fit was to celebrate a diversity of plants from the Melbourne zone while providing a space for retreat and relaxation.

Form
The project involved the restoration of an established rooftop landscape and the reintroduction of planting across the building façade, including the use of wicking planters in areas where conventional irrigation was not practical. The renewed green roof was designed to provide a valuable outdoor space for staff while strengthening biodiversity, stormwater management and urban cooling outcomes within a highly built-up inner-city setting.
About the project
This was a multi-disciplinary approach to designing outdoor spaces and green infrastructure. The design was conceived by LandProjects with the green infrastructure specifications worked on by Evergreen Infrastructure. Other professional disciplines such as BLP Architects and numerous consultants ensured this project was a success from its interior fit out through to green roof and facade planting.
Impact
The project demonstrates how an existing green roof can be successfully renewed and adapted to meet contemporary expectations, extending the life of an important urban green asset while reconnecting people with nature in the workplace.

Every element had to respond to the building’s structure, exposure, drainage, irrigation, access and long-term maintenance requirements. The result is a renewed living landscape that not only performs environmentally, but also provides staff with a meaningful connection to nature within a complex inner-city building."
